HOPE Program at St. Raphael's Hospital

The HOPE Program (Having the Opportunity to Prepare for Employment) is an award-winning Saint Raphael's initiative that provides training, education and counseling to adults who are making the transition from welfare to work. Iniitially targeted to women, the program now includes men.  More than 100 adults have graduated from the program since its launch in 1996.

Participants receive classroom training and one-on-one mentoring on topics such as interviewing, resume preparation, time management and customer services, and are taught about workplace diversity and meeting employer expectations.

Wednesday - Daily Affirmation

Today I change my attitude from indifference to love, from apathy to enthusiasm, and from anxiety to calm.

A Reason to Celebrate!

Hi Everyone,

On Friday, June 15th, Recovery University (RU) held its graduation ceremony at the Trinity Church on the Green.  RU is a 60 hour training that takes place over 6 or 7 weeks.  Students must pass an examination to earn State Certification as a Recovery Specialist.   Liberty had three graduates in the most recent New Haven class.

It is exciting to see that the people who chose to enroll in the training came from three different programs – TLP, Safe & Secure and SHP.  They were encouraged by their case managers to apply and as they awaited acceptance.  Liberty offered space at the Church Street offices for RU to hold the New Haven area session.  The students got support from their families, staff, and friends to finish the program.

It takes tremendous effort for adults to return to school and to start the process of returning to the workforce.  LCS is a supportive community to people as they recover their lives.  This is just one example of how the community comes together to achieve positive outcomes.

You might be interested to know that two of the recent graduates are Women of Liberty - they are members of our Women's Program!

The Women of Liberty

It is an honor to meet so many beautiful women through the LCS Women's Program.  They never cease to amaze.

Today, in the program, loving and kind acts were in abundance.  One woman made a skirt for another.  She doesn't use a pattern, she sews by instinct.  It is a joy to see her share her gift.

Another woman helped someone else with her resume and with learning to use this blog.

Still another made copies of the Women for Sobriety 13 steps to use to lead a group of women in her residential program. She was inspired by them and wanted to share. (The Women for Sobriety 13 steps were posted on this blog.)

This generosity and support took place in the course of 30 minutes.  Makes one wonder what miracles are possible.

Women for Sobriety

WFS “New Life” Acceptance Program

  1. I have a life-threatening problem that once had me.
I now take charge of my life and my disease. I accept the responsibility.
  2. Negative thoughts destroy only myself.
My first conscious sober act must be to remove negativity from my life.
  3. Happiness is a habit I will develop.
Happiness is created, not waited for.
  4. Problems bother me only to the degree I permit them to.
I now better understand my problems and do not permit problems to overwhelm me.
  5. I am what I think.
I am a capable, competent, caring, compassionate woman.
  6. Life can be ordinary or it can be great.
Greatness is mine by a conscious effort.
  7. Love can change the course of my world.
    Caring becomes all important.
  8. The fundamental object of life is emotional and spiritual growth.
Daily I put my life into a proper order, knowing which are the priorities.
  9. The past is gone forever.
No longer will I be victimized by the past. I am a new person.
  10. All love given returns.
I will learn to know that others love me.
  11. Enthusiasm is my daily exercise.
I treasure all moments of my new life
  12. I am a competent woman and have much to give life.
This is what I am and I shall know it always.
  13. I am responsible for myself and for my actions.
I am in charge of my mind, my thoughts, and my life.
To make the Program effective for you, arise each morning fifteen minutes earlier than usual and go over the Thirteen Affirmations. Then begin to think about each one by itself. Take one Statement and use it consciously all day. At the end of the day review the use of it and what effects it had that day for you and your actions.

Daily Affirmation - Friday

I am smiling, smiling, smiling! My smiles light up everything like a ray of sunshine.

Hill Market Opportunities

The following is information sent to Liberty Community Services about City Seed and forms of payment/support available to many of  you.

  1. Methods of Payment:  CitySeed markets accept cash and credit/debit as well as the following benefits:  SNAP (Food Stamps), WIC, FMNP, SFMNP.  We recognize that these many benefit programs are complex and can be hard to understand, so the CMHC Foundation will be putting together an information sheet to describe what these different benefits are and how they can be used at the market.  More to come soon!
  2. Double SNAP:  CitySeed received a generous grant to provide a $1 to $1 incentive match for SNAP (EBT/Food Stamps) transactions up to $10 per day.  Incentive will be given as tokens that can be used for fruit, vegetables and fruit/vegetable seedlings at all CitySeed markets.  English and Spanish informational flyers are attached here.
  3. Community Supported Market (CSM) Shares:  One way to support the market is to pre-purchase a weekly share of seasonal produce for $13/week (15 weeks for the season).  Each week you can pick up a bag of seasonal produce selected from all the market farms.  The bag also comes packed with cooking and handling tips.  Many CMHC staff and clients have taken advantage of this opportunity in the past and we encourage new participants to try this option to sample new produce and old favorites.  The CMHC Foundation is also offering subsidized Community Supported Market (CSM) shares of seasonal produce for our CMHC clients partner agencies in the CSN.  The sign-up form with instructions is attached here.
  4. Market Coupons:  The CMHC Foundation offers $5 market coupons for CMHC clients and client programs, good at the Hill Farmers’ Market and all CitySeed markets.  Designated CMHC staff can request market coupons from Sharon DeGenaro, Mon-Fri, 9-noon.  The CMHC Foundation requests that each team, unit or program designate a liaison to request coupons.
  5. Arts & Handcrafts Sales:  The CMHC Foundation will be staffing a vendor tent at the market and invites clients and client programs to sell their handcrafted items at the tent.  There is no charge for this opportunity.  Individual clients or client programs will manage their own sales.
  6. FREE Demonstrations & Entertainment:  CitySeed is planning a variety of cooking and food handling demonstrations and the CMHC Foundation is planning a variety of music and arts performances as well as instruction in yoga, gardening, animal care, bike maintenance, fitness and more.
  7. SNAP Outreach:  Representatives from CARE will be at the Hill Market to do SNAP (Food Stamps) eligibility screening and outreach.  We’ll provide more detailed information about this resource as it becomes available.

Affirmations to Read Every Morning and Evening

I can accept that I am a less than perfect human being. I do make mistakes like any other
human. If I make a mistake it doesn't mean I AM a mistake.

Because I want a specific thing or for people to behave in specific ways doesn't mean that
will happen.

I can regret mistakes I have made, forgive myself, learn from the mistake and choose not
to blame myself or others.

I have a mix of qualities, skills, and experiences. Some I consider good and some not so
good. None of those totally define me because I am a mix of all of them.

Confidence is about accepting myself as I am and accepting others as they are. It doesn't
matter what happens, we are who we are.

I have a life-threatening mental obsession/compulsion that I can choose to NOT indulge in

I accept life as it comes. Acceptance is the key to living with joy and serenity. Acceptance
is my spirituality expressed.

The past is gone, tomorrow might not come, today is what matters.

I am what I think. Positive thoughts lift me up, negative thoughts take me down.

A happy, fulfilling life is something I want and will work for.

I am responsible for myself and for my actions.

The more I give, the more I will receive.

I have the power to change myself.

Monday - Daily Affirmation

Each day in some way, I am my own best friend.

Project Storefront Sponsors Free Sewing Class

There is a new clothing store on Orange Street near Crown called NW (Neville Wisdom) - in the Ninth Square neighborhood. Neville creates and sews his own designs. Project Storefronts is sponsoring free sewing classes with Neville. If you are interested in a sewing class, you may fill out a form at the store and have your name entered to be part of a class for free.

Why not take the short walk around the corner to visit NW and complete the form?  It could be a great way to learn about sewing from an expert while meeting people with similar interests.
